Now Get Earthquake Alerts on Your Google Smartwatch

Google is expanding its earthquake detection and alert system to WearOS smartwatches, enhancing real-time access to life-saving notifications for users across the globe.

Originally introduced in 2020 for Android smartphones, Google’s earthquake alert mechanism leverages motion sensors embedded in millions of Android devices. The system collects seismic activity data and, when unusual ground movement is detected, pushes out alerts indicating the magnitude and proximity of the epicenter.

According to recent updates from Google System Release Notes, WearOS will now support these alerts. The update, tied to Google Play Services version 25.21, will enable compatible smartwatches to notify users if a tremor is imminent. Devices powered by WearOS, including models from Samsung, Fossil, and others, are expected to receive the feature soon.

Although Google has not formally launched the WearOS earthquake alert integration, traces of the rollout were uncovered in an APK teardown by Android Authority, indicating the infrastructure is currently being implemented.

Once seismic activity is identified by Google’s detection network, the information is pushed directly to users' smartwatches. The alert will include estimated earthquake magnitude, location details, and a warning if shaking is expected.

This development ensures that even when a user’s phone is out of reach — during workouts, while cooking, or when placed in another room — their smartwatch can still provide critical alerts.

The addition of this system to WearOS broadens the reach of emergency alerts, particularly in vulnerable and densely populated regions like India. While earthquake predictions remain uncertain, a few seconds of early warning can make a significant difference in safety and preparedness.
